The Medicare program is made up of different parts, and understanding what each part does is the first step in understanding your coverage options.
Here’s a simple breakdown of Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D.

Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health services.
Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they qualify through their work history.

Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, lab work, preventive care, and medically necessary services.
Part B includes a monthly premium and generally shares costs with you when services are used.

Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
These plans often include medical, hospital, and prescription drug coverage in one plan.

Part D helps cover prescription medications.
Drug coverage may be purchased separately with Original Medicare or included as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.
